Getting paid through Idaho's Parental Choice Tax Credit

Idaho's Parental Choice Tax Credit helps families of children in nonpublic school pay for qualifying education expenses, including core-subject tutoring and nonpublic school tuition. Families pay you; the state then credits or advances the money to them. You don't register with the state, but your paid receipts are what families must have to claim it.

Provider registration

None: families claim the credit

Who can apply

  • Families apply through the State of Idaho's official My School Choice website. They can't claim the credit unless they apply for it and are awarded it, and no one is guaranteed to get it.1
  • Qualifying expenses include full-time K-12 nonpublic school tuition or a curriculum covering at least English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies; textbooks; tutoring for those four core subjects; reasonable transportation to and from the nonpublic school; and nationally standardized assessments and preparatory courses for them.1
  • The Tax Commission says the legislation doesn't mention any other kinds of expenses, it has no complete list of qualifying expenses, and it can't prequalify an expense.1

How you get paid

  1. 1Families need paid invoices or receipts that show the provider's information, what the expense was, how much it was, that they paid it, and when they paid it.1
  2. 2An eligible child can receive an advance payment only once in their K-12 career; families reconcile advance payments against their paid receipts in their Tax Commission account.1

What trips providers up

  • Tutoring qualifies only for the four core subjects (English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies). Name the subject on every receipt.1
  • Families must repay money spent on expenses that don't qualify or that lack proper receipts, and everyone is subject to audit.1

When families pay you directly

  • Families pay providers directly and are reimbursed by the state through the credit or an advance payment, so they need a paid receipt for every expense.1
