What Arizona ESA funds can pay for

Arizona's approved categories come from A.R.S. §15-2402(B)(4), and families must pick one of them for every purchase in ClassWallet. Students with disabilities can also use funds for educational therapies and related goods.

If your service or product isn't on the list, families can't buy it with program funds, however good it is. Check before you apply.

Schools and courses1

  • Tuition, fees and required textbooks at a qualified private school in Arizona
  • Nonpublic online learning programs and courses
  • Community college, state university or accredited private postsecondary tuition and textbooks
  • Individual classes and extracurriculars at a public school

Tutoring and teaching1

  • Tutoring or teaching from an individual or business with the required credential
  • Academic and non-academic lessons, from math and science to music, art, martial arts, swimming, chess and driver's education
  • Curriculum and the supplemental materials it requires or recommends

Tests, technology and other2

  • Standardized achievement tests, AP exams and college-admission exams such as the ACT and SAT
  • Computers, tablets, calculators, microscopes, telescopes and printers (not TVs, phones or game consoles)
  • Uniforms bought from or through the school
  • Public transportation between home and a qualified school

Not eligible

  • Medical services and supplies, massage, chiropractic, acupuncture and similar non-approved therapies.3
  • Travel costs for teachers or tutors, late-payment fees, and non-educational school fees such as yearbooks, parking passes and fundraising requirements.3
  • Dog training, and paying the account holder or student for anything.4

Worth knowing

  • A portion of every student's scholarship must be spent on each of reading, grammar, mathematics, social studies and science.5
  • Pre-approval isn't required, but families can request it through an ESA Support Ticket.6
